The Hawkesbury river flats have a rich agricultural history.
For decades this was Sydneyβs food belt β potatoes, cauliflowers, cabbages, corn, spinach, watermelons and so many other crops were grown here. In the early mornings, trucks loaded with fresh fruit and vegetables would head off to the markets in Sydney.
Today, much of this land is used for turf farms, taking advantage of the same rich, alluvial soil that has always made the region so productive.
While the area is in the flood plain, it also provides a gateway to country living.
The 5 to 10 kilometre stretch of road along the flats offers a beautiful buffer from the city β and some of the most spectacular sunsets with the Blue Mountains as the backdrop.
Itβs the kind of place where you can almost feel your blood pressure drop.
