And when the sun goes down, the landscape transforms into a spectacular sea of twinkling lights stretching across the valley towards the city. ✨

With magnificent old trees, peaceful river views, beautiful countryside and so much local history, it’s a wonderful spot to spend an afternoon.

And it’s another reminder of what makes the Hawkesbury acreage lifestyle so special.

Sydney’s food belt: country living on the river flats

𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗡𝗧𝗥𝗬 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗢𝗡 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗥𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥 𝗙𝗟𝗔𝗧𝗦

The Hawkesbury river flats have a rich agricultural history.

For decades this was Sydney’s food belt — potatoes, cauliflowers, cabbages, corn, spinach, watermelons and so many other crops were grown here. In the early mornings, trucks loaded with fresh fruit and vegetables would head off to the markets in Sydney.

Today, much of this land is used for turf farms, taking advantage of the same rich, alluvial soil that has always made the region so productive.

While the area is in the flood plain, it also provides a gateway to country living.

The 5 to 10 kilometre stretch of road along the flats offers a beautiful buffer from the city — and some of the most spectacular sunsets with the Blue Mountains as the backdrop.

It’s the kind of place where you can almost feel your blood pressure drop.

Hawkesbury flooding: a community conversation

🌊 𝐇𝐀𝐖𝐊𝐄𝐒𝐁𝐔𝐑𝐘 𝐅𝐋𝐎𝐎𝐃𝐈𝐍𝐆 — 𝐂𝐎𝐔𝐋𝐃 𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐁𝐄 𝐀 𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐒𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍?

I’m here at Sackville, overlooking a beautiful section of the Hawkesbury River.

But this location also helps explain one of the biggest challenges facing our region — the 𝐇𝐚𝐰𝐤𝐞𝐬𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐲’𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐭𝐮𝐛 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭.

During major floods, water flows into the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley faster than it can escape through the narrow downstream gorges, causing floodwaters to back up across the floodplain.

For local families, acreage owners, farmers and businesses, the consequences can be devastating.

🏡 𝐍𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐮𝐩.

The Hawkesbury Business Group is hosting an evening to unveil a proposed flood mitigation initiative which organisers suggest could potentially reduce flood levels by up to two metres.

That’s a proposal worth hearing more about, understanding and examining carefully.
